Real talk, y’all. If you’ve been sitting on the fence about starting your service-based business because the job market feels terrifying, you’ve been “thinking about it” for six months, or you tried once and life got in the way, this one is for you.
Today I’m sharing Lauren’s spotlight story, and I’m warning you right now, you’re going to want to screenshot half of this.
Lauren is a Conversions for Clients student who went from getting made redundant in December to billing £6,125 in her fourth month of business. No fancy website. No massive audience. No “wait until I’m ready” energy.
She just decided she was going to do the dang thing, and then she actually did it.
Here’s exactly how she pulled it off, what she charged at each stage, where she found her clients, and the mindset shift that took her from “I have no self-belief” to “I feel invincible.”
If you’re a one-on-one service provider wondering how to start an ad management business (or any service business, honestly), grab a coffee. This is the real, no-fluff version.
Why “Back Against the Wall” Is the Best Place to Start Your Service Business
Lauren got made redundant at the end of last year. Her contract ended. Her husband, who’s a contractor in graphic design, was struggling for work because AI is gutting his industry. Two young kids. A mortgage. The whole thing.
She told me she gave herself three months to make this work before she’d have to go crawl back into a corporate role she didn’t want.
And here’s the thing I want you to really hear. When your back is against the wall, you don’t have time for the fancy stuff. You don’t have time to spend three weeks on your logo. You don’t have time to “wait until you feel ready.” You don’t have time to perfect your website before you go pitch.
You only have time for the things that actually move the needle.
Lauren told me, “I treated it like my life depended on it.” And that energy? That’s exactly why she scaled this fast.
Back Against the Wall Looks Different for Everyone
Now, I want to be clear here. Back against the wall doesn’t have to mean financial rock bottom. For me, it was literally financial. For Lauren, it was the thought of having to go back to corporate that made her skin crawl.
Maybe for you, it’s:
- Watching your kids grow up on a daycare schedule that doesn’t work for your family
- The 9-5 grind sucking the life out of you
- Knowing you’re capable of more but feeling stuck
- Wanting to travel, move countries, or build a life that’s not chained to a desk
Whatever your version is, the people who scale the fastest are the ones who decide there is no other option.
You don’t get to that level of focus when you’re hedging your bets. You don’t get there when you’re treating your business like a “fun side thing” you’ll see how it goes. You get there when you decide this is it.
How Lauren Scaled From £500 to £6,125 in 4 Months
Let’s actually break down the numbers because this is where most people sleep on what’s possible.
- January: £500
- February: £2,000
- March: £4,850
- April: £7,600 (yes, even higher than what she originally posted)
And she did this with four clients total, each from a completely different source. That part matters, so we’re going to dig into it.
Her First Client: £500 a Month
Lauren’s very first client? She charged £500 a month. Was that low? Yes. Did it matter? No.
The most important thing in the beginning is the confidence that comes from actually signing a paying client. She got the ball rolling. She got the experience. She got the testimonial.
And then, as soon as her confidence grew, she let that £500 client go. Her words: “As soon as I realized, my confidence grew, I thought, I don’t need that client. I can find another one and charge them three or four times the price.”
That right there is the move. Start. Get reps. Then raise your rates. Do not sit at £500 forever because you’re scared to lose them.
Her Last Two Clients: £3,000 First Month, Then Retainer
By the time Lauren signed her last two clients, she had completely repackaged her offer. Instead of just selling ongoing services, she structured it like this:
- Foundational Month: £3,000 flat fee for deep onboarding (interviews, messaging clarity, brand voice work, all the strategy stuff)
- Ongoing Retainer: £1,500/month with a 12-month commitment
This is the strategist trifecta we teach inside Strategist Society in action. You’re not selling tactics. You’re selling clarity, strategy, and then implementation.
And the best part? Her clients are obsessed with her work. One of them literally said “your content gave me goosebumps.” Another said she took all their meandering ideas and gave them complete clarity for the first time.
That’s what you get paid premium prices for. Not for being the cheapest ads manager in the market. For being the strategist who actually understands the business.
The 4 Client Acquisition Channels That Actually Work
Here is the part you need to tattoo on your forearm if you’re trying to figure out how to start an ad management business: there is no one right way to find clients.
Lauren signed four clients from four completely different sources. Watch this.
1. Switch a Current Client to Marketing
Lauren was already doing some work for her first client. She just pivoted them to marketing services. This is the easiest first client you will ever have, because they already trust you and they already pay you.
Ask yourself: who is already paying me for something? Could I pivot them to a service I now offer? Could I add on to what I’m currently doing?
2. Cold Emails
Her second client came from cold emails. Yes, cold emails still work in 2026. No, you don’t need to be a copywriting genius. You just have to actually send them and follow up.
People love to hate on cold outreach because it requires effort, but it absolutely works when you do it right.
3. Old Contacts From Previous Roles
Client number three came from someone Lauren had worked with in her previous career. Your old network is a goldmine you’re sitting on. Former colleagues. People you collaborated with. Folks you met at events.
Have you sent a single message to anyone from your previous corporate life telling them what you do now? If not, that’s homework.
4. Local Facebook Groups
Her fourth client came from a post Lauren wrote in her local Facebook community group. Not some huge online business group. Her actual neighborhood community.
People underestimate how much trust local connection builds. Don’t sleep on the small, geographic, “people who know your face” communities.
The point of all this? Stop waiting for the perfect marketing channel. Pick three. Show up consistently. Watch what works for you specifically. Lauren is proof that you do not need to master Instagram, build a 10,000-person email list, or have a viral TikTok before you start signing clients.
How to Charge More So You Don’t Burn Out in Month 3
Here’s the part nobody warns you about. The first two months Lauren was running her business? She was exhausted.
She was setting up systems, finding clients, doing the actual marketing work, learning her tools, doing all the things. And then she had a moment where she looked up and realized something.
She had doubled her corporate income and was still doing all the work herself.
That’s not the dream. That’s the trap. If you’re working more hours for more money, you haven’t built a business. You’ve built a higher-paying job.
This is exactly why Lauren listened to the Champagne Clients podcast episode and started restructuring her offers. She started moving away from being the “doer” and toward being the strategist who provides clarity, frameworks, and high-level direction.
The Strategist Approach in Action
Here’s what Lauren did differently with her later clients (and what you should be doing if you want to scale to $10K-$30K months without burning out):
- Charge a premium foundational month. £3,000 for deep onboarding and strategy. Not the standard “$500 setup fee.”
- Lead with strategy, not implementation. Voice guides. Avatar guides. Messaging clarity. The stuff that makes their entire business better.
- Use AI to deliver clarity faster. I used to charge $5,000 for a voice guide because it took weeks. With the right AI systems, we can now create the same caliber of work in 15-20 minutes. Charge the premium. Cut the time.
- Position yourself as irreplaceable by AI. Tactical ad management can be automated. Strategic clarity cannot. The strategist always wins.
This is exactly what we teach inside Strategist Society for service providers who are ready to scale past $10K/month without becoming a slave to their own business.
The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
Lauren told me something I want you to read twice.
She said, “I am a completely different person. Three months on, I feel quite invincible now because I’ve worked through some of the hardest couple of months.”
Now here’s what I want to point out. Lauren did not have confidence when she started. She had the opposite. She had self-doubt, fear, and a clock ticking on her three-month timeline.
The confidence didn’t come first. The action did. And the confidence followed.
This is the thing that trips up so many service providers. They’re waiting to “feel ready” or “feel confident” before they start charging premium prices, before they pitch the big clients, before they go all in.
That feeling doesn’t show up first. It shows up after you’ve done the brave thing a few times in a row.
Permission to Have a Season of Hustle
Real talk, I’m anti-hustle culture. We are not running our businesses on burnout fuel. But there’s a difference between toxic hustle (working 80 hours a week on stuff that doesn’t matter) and aligned seasons of hustle (going hard for a short window on the right things).
When you’re starting out, when your back is against the wall, when you’re trying to replace a corporate income? That’s a season of hustle. And it’s okay.
What’s not okay is staying there forever.
Lauren did her hard season. Now she finishes work at 3pm to pick up her kids. That’s the win. Three months of going all in to buy yourself years of freedom on your own terms.
What Success Actually Looks Like (From Lauren’s Eyes)
I asked Lauren what success means to her next. Her answer wasn’t “more money for the sake of money.”
She said:
- Hitting £10,000 months
- Doubling her corporate income
- Building a mobile business so her family can travel, sell their house, maybe move back to Australia
- Bringing her husband into the business so they can build it together
- Not being chained to a 9-to-5 schedule
- Actually being present with her kids
Y’all, this is why we do this work. Not for the bragging rights. Not for the screenshots. For the freedom to design a life that actually fits the people we love.
Your Turn To Do The Dang Thing
If you’re reading this and thinking “I’m just not where Lauren is,” I want to remind you of something. Lauren wasn’t where Lauren is four months ago either.
She was scared. She had no confidence. She had two kids and a mortgage and a husband whose work was drying up. She had every reason to play it safe and go find a corporate job.
She decided not to.
You can decide too. The only difference between you and Lauren is that she stopped waiting and started doing.
So here’s your next step:
- If you’re in the “I don’t even know where to start” stage: Head to confidentadmanager.com to get the exact roadmap Lauren followed to land her first paying clients (no experience required).

- If you’re already booking clients but want to scale past $10K months without burning out: Come hang out with us inside Strategist Society, where I teach the strategist trifecta and the systems that let you charge premium prices for less of your time.
Now hear me on this. You don’t need permission, confidence, or a perfect plan to start. You need a decision and a deadline.
Lauren gave herself three months. What are you going to give yourself?
Go out there and do the dang thing, friends. Your future self is begging you to start today.
