Not All Clients Are Created Equal: The Champagne Client Matrix That Will Transform Your Service Business

What if the reason you’re exhausted, underpaid, and low-key starting to resent your business has nothing to do with your services, your pricing, or your strategy?

What if it’s everything to do with who you’re working with?

Y’all, I need to talk to you about the Champagne Client Matrix. Because after working with over 3,000 service providers over the last seven years, I’ve identified the four types of clients every service provider attracts and exactly what each one is costing you. By the time you finish reading this, you’re going to look at your client roster in a completely different way.

First, Let’s Clear Something Up: You Don’t Have a Pricing Problem

If you’ve been on discovery calls where prospects say things like “that’s a little out of my budget,” “can you work with me on your price,” or “someone else only charges $500,” and you’ve started wondering if your rates are the problem, I need to stop you right there.

You don’t have a pricing problem. You have a positioning problem, a messaging problem, and a prequalification problem.

If the right clients were seeing your content, having conversations with you, and getting on your calls, price wouldn’t even come up. The issue isn’t your rates. The issue is who you’re attracting in the first place.

And while we’re being honest, how many of you have a full roster and are still exhausted? You’re working 40-plus hours a week, you should technically be hitting your income goals, and yet you’re stinking tired. I run a million-dollar business and work 25 to 27 hours per week. Inside Strategist Society, we track this. Our average member works 24.5 hours per week, and some of them are doing $30,000 and $40,000 months at that workload.

If you’re working 40 hours a week and those numbers aren’t showing up for you, it’s either a systems issue or, more likely, it’s a client issue. That’s exactly what the Champagne Client Matrix helps you solve.

What Is the Champagne Client Matrix?

Think of it as a simple grid with four boxes and two axes.

On one axis, you have dollars: how much clients are willing to pay you. Higher up means they pay more, lower means they pay less. On the other axis, you have client quality: how great they are to work with, how much they respect you, and how solid their business actually is.

When you put those two things together, you get four distinct client types. Let’s walk through all of them, and as we do, I want you to honestly place each of your current clients into one of these four categories.

The 4 Client Types in the Champagne Client Matrix

Type 1: The Bargain Bin Client (Low Pay, Low Quality)

No shame if this is where some of your clients land right now. I’ve been there. Most of us have, especially when we’re just getting started.

Bargain bin clients are exactly what they sound like. They’re paying you the bare minimum, think $500, $1,000, maybe $1,500 a month. They come to you with ad budgets of $300 for the whole month and then wonder why results aren’t rolling in. These clients see you as an employee, not a strategist. They’re not paying for your brain. They’re paying you to check tasks off a list.

And because they don’t see your value, here’s what happens: you start not to see it either.

I call this the confidence tax, and it’s one of the most expensive things you can pay. When your confidence depletes, it gets harder and harder to land new clients, especially the premium ones. You start to feel like you’re the problem. You’re not. It’s a client problem.

These clients will DM you on weekends. They’ll micromanage everything. They want the whole stinking world on a shoestring budget, and they leave you busy, broke, and burned out.

One of our Strategist Society members came to us completely burned out on web design and was ready to pivot her entire business to a new service. During our onboarding call, I asked her: if you had different clients, would you still love building websites? She said yes. So we didn’t switch her service, we switched the type of client she was attracting. Within months, she landed a $15,000 contract. The service was never the problem. The clients were.

Type 2: The Golden Handcuff Client (Low-to-Mid Pay, High Quality)

These are the sneaky ones. And honestly? They’re the hardest to let go.

Golden handcuff clients pay you okay money, not premium, but decent. Y’all have probably been working together a long time. You genuinely like them. You vibe. Maybe you’ve grabbed coffee. They appreciate you, and it just feels good.

Here’s the truth though, and I need you to hear this: they will never pay you significantly more than what they’re paying you right now. They still see you as someone who does a really good job executing tasks, not as an irreplaceable strategic partner. If you went to them with a major price increase to match your actual value, they’d likely drop you.

There’s a ceiling on what you can earn from this client, and you’ve already hit it.

One of our Strategist Society members held onto a golden handcuff client for a really long time. When she finally let them go, her business grew to a completely new level almost immediately. Letting go of the comfortable thing made room for the right client.

We are not in business just to make friends. We’re in business because we have goals, families, vacations, and dreams to fund. Can a golden handcuff client sometimes convert to a champagne client? Occasionally, with the right conversations about scope and pricing. But most of the time, they’ve already hit their ceiling.

Type 3: The Miracle Worker Client (High Pay, Low Quality)

Oh, this one. Y’all, this is the orange zone.

Miracle worker clients pay you really good money and they absolutely see you as a strategist. They gloat about you. They think you’re the best thing since sliced bread. And honestly, it feels amazing, until it doesn’t.

Because here’s the catch: their business is a hot mess express. They’re always putting out fires. They want to implement every shiny new strategy any coach puts in front of them. One week it’s a new funnel, the next week it’s a new platform, the week after that they want to completely pivot their entire business model.

Their money is inconsistent. Their energy is frantic. They’re always in crisis mode. And because they see you as smart and capable, the scope creep gets completely out of hand. Can you look at my funnel? Can you fix my copy? Can you review this email sequence? Need it in 24 hours. What do you think about this new idea?

You are not their strategist. You are their therapist.

I personally attracted a lot of miracle-worker clients in my one-on-one days because I’m a grounded person, and that chaotic energy is drawn to grounded people. If you’re super bubbly and friendly, you might be pulling in more golden handcuffs. Knowing who you naturally attract helps you spot the red flags faster.

These clients are hard to let go because they pay well and they hype up your ego. But working in that frantic, chaotic energy every single day is absolutely draining. And worse, you start to think this is just how all clients are. It’s not. You’re just working with the wrong ones.

Type 4: The Champagne Client (High Pay, High Quality)

This is the green zone. This is what we’re building toward.

Champagne clients pay a premium, full stop. They have the means to invest in your services and the capacity to execute what you deliver. They don’t spiral when one ad campaign underperforms. They don’t panic during a launch because they’ve run a real business long enough to know it’s a long game.

They respect you as an expert. They don’t micromanage. They don’t need you to be their hype person or their therapist. They want your brain, and then they get out of your way and let you do your thing. They respect boundaries, both their own and yours. They’re not sliding into your DMs on a Saturday night. They don’t pay late. They run their business on numbers and strategy, not emotions and chaos.

And here’s what I love most: your confidence grows when you work with champagne clients. When someone of that caliber trusts you, invests in you, and values your expertise, something shifts inside you.

Emily, one of our Strategist Society members, went from charging just a few hundred dollars a month to working with clients spending $30,000 to $50,000 a month on ads. She credits so much of that growth to what happened when she finally started working with clients who treated her like the expert she is. Her confidence grew. When your confidence grows, you charge more. You attract an even higher-level client. The whole thing compounds. That is the champagne client effect.

How to Audit Your Client Roster Right Now

Pull up your client list, whether it’s in your head, a spreadsheet, or a notes app. Put one of these four labels next to each client:

  • Bargain Bin
  • Golden Handcuff
  • Miracle Worker
  • Champagne

Then ask yourself honestly: what would your business look like if every single client on that list was a champagne client?

Probably something like a more predictable schedule. Less time on your phone talking people off the ledge. Higher revenue with fewer clients, because you’d be charging what you actually should be.

Mandy, one of our members, went from working 40 to 50 hours a week to working with just four consulting clients at $12,000 a month and hitting $19,000 in monthly revenue. Her new problem? She needed to find hobbies. That is the kind of problem I want you to have.

What to Do With the Results of Your Audit

Here’s what I also want you to know: not every client can move to champagne status. Some bargain bin clients, bless their hearts, just aren’t there in their business and they’re never going to be. The goal is not to convert everyone. The goal is to phase out the clients who are draining your confidence and your capacity, and start attracting the ones who match where you are going.

And if you’re struggling to attract champagne clients right now, the most likely reason is your messaging. You’re either invisible, the best kept secret in your industry, or your messaging sounds exactly like everyone else in your space and it’s quietly speaking to the bargain bin client. There is nothing in your content that makes a champagne client stop scrolling and think, this is exactly who I’ve been looking for.

That is a messaging problem. And a messaging problem is fixable.

If you’re sitting here nodding along, knowing exactly which clients are draining you and realizing your content isn’t calling in the right people, you are not starting from scratch. You’re starting from a place of awareness. And awareness is everything.

Get Your Champagne Messaging Dialed In

The next step to getting champagne clients finding you, coming pre-qualified, and ready to pay a premium is exactly what I teach in my Chasing to Chosen Workshop. It’s only $97 and it will get your entire messaging dialed in, from your content to your conversations. It tells you what to say, what not to say, and exactly who to look for.

This is one of our most popular workshops ever, and the results come fast. One student joined, updated her LinkedIn profile the very next day using her new champagne messaging, and landed three discovery calls within seven days. Y’all, I could be charging $500 for this workshop.

For $97 you get the two-hour workshop, lifetime access, and two custom GPTs that will do the majority of the heavy lifting for you.

Head to brandimowles.com/chasing to grab it now.

You did not start this business to work 50 hours a week for clients who don’t value you. You started it because you are really good at what you do, and you deserve to be compensated for it. Champagne clients are out there right now, actively looking for someone exactly like you. We just need to make sure they can find you and know without a doubt that you are the one.

Go do your audit. Be honest about your roster. Then go grab the workshop and get your champagne messaging dialed in. Do the dang thing.
